A pub in South Oxfordshire has seen its food hygiene rating decrease after being told "improvement was necessary" last year.

The Red Lion, located at 39 Wallingford Road, Cholsey, Wallingford was given a one-out-of-five rating after an assessment on March 13, the Food Standards Agency shows.

The pub was previously given a two-out-of-five rating following a visit from the council’s environmental health team in March last year, where they were told "improvement was needed".

Inspectors have since handed the pub a downgrade in rating telling the boozer that “major improvement is necessary".

The inspection looks at hygienic food handling, cleanliness and the condition of facilities and management of food safety.

Businesses given low ratings are told what specific improvements are needed to improve hygiene standards.
