The new access ramp at Didcot Railway Centre has been opened.

On Friday, April 26, it was officially inaugurated by Lord Peter Hendy, chairman of Network Rail.

The revamped entrance, replacing a slim staircase, is an extension to the subway at Didcot Parkway station.

Lord Hendy and chief executive of Didcot Railway Centre, Clive Hetherington, jointly unlocked the new gates.

Also present were Joe Graham, business assurance director of Great Western Railway, and Richard Preston, chairman of the Great Western Society.

The updated ramp will provide more convenient access for wheelchair users and parents with buggies.

A wide staircase also serves as an alternative to the ramp.

The construction process, which began in September 2023, involved excavating a large hole, pile installation for structural support, and pouring reinforced concrete for the walls and floor of the ramp.

Lord Hendy said: "You can't have a modern museum without proper access."

Mr Hetherington added: "It's been a long time planning but finally we have got it done."

Although some minor finishing touches remain, the ramp will be accessible for the "Steam into the 40s" event hosted over the weekend of May 4, 5, and 6.

The project, costing approximately £800,000, was funded by legacies and contributions from the Great Western Society members.
